Rhodes University Vice Chancellor has taken an active role in getting to know his students, Thandi Bombi Reports below.
“I am honoured that I can be a part of the change that is taking place here,”said Rhodes University Vice chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizela. “I agree that we need to bridge the gap of communication and so I propose that we have one of these meetings every term.”
This statement was made at an emergency student body meeting held on 19 March 2015. Although a lot has kept both Mabizela and students busy, Mabizela along with Dean of Students Collen Vasselou have taken it apon themselves to eat at every dining hall on campus in an effort to get to know the students.
At Drosty Dinning Hall instead of Mabizela announcing that he was visiting every dining hall because of a promise he made earlier, he said, “I sometimes give lifts to students and take them to the bus station when they go home. While we drive there I will ask, ‘who is your vice chancellor?’ and they will say ‘I don’t Know’,” He went on to explain how he is making an effort to get to know the students so they also know who they can turn to whenever in need.
